Alpha draft analysis by EWJ

Alpha - Draft analysis

Here is my stab at numerically ranking the teams you all drafted. The ranks are based on the laughable assumption that my personal predictions of each players performance actually mean something. That's right, this isn't even based on some so-called expert's opinion in a magazine or online, these predictions are ones that I made up my very own self after about an average of ten second deliberation each. So they are bound to be way off the mark. Historically, my starting pitcher predictions have been particularly bad, not that the ones for hitters are any good either. To make matters worse, these predictions were made a couple of weeks ago and some of them already look ridiculous, even to me. But I used them anyway.

In ranking the rotations I took the 4 starters from each team that I had the lowest predicted ERA for, on the assumption that each team would add a big name free agent SP, since there are ten of them by my count. I did the same thing with each position, in some cases assuming a platoon. No weight at all was given to your bench, just your starting lineup, nor to your relievers, so those are other obvious shortcomings.

Note that these aren't really predictions of finish order, just rating of how the each draft went. So without further preamble, here are my rankings of the draft from 10th down to 1st.

10th Cashtros SP rank - 7th (4.20 ERA) Lineup rank 9th (5.11 Runs per Game)

Admiral was hurt by my assumption that Bard will only play about half the time, which could be wrong, and that whoever he gets to play the other half of the time won't be very good.

Strengths: None really. That was the big problem, not that he was awful anywhere. His best rating was the 4th best third baseman.

Weaknesses: Catcher, shortstop

9th Chain Gang SP rank - 8th (4.23), Lineup rank - 8th (5.13 RPG)

The Judge was hurt by my assumption that Griffey would be forced to play vs. LHP, but helped by my assumptions that Griffey and Glaus would stay healthy all year.

Strengths: Shortstop is a mild strength with Reyes, but nothing is overly strong.

Weaknesses: Starting pitching, first base

8th Runamuks SP rank 1st (3.51), Lineup rank 10th (4.64 RPG)

Rip was helped by my assumption that Randy Johnson would be pretty healthy and put up a good ERA, but was hurt by my assumption Francouer wouldn't improve enough against RHP to take the playing time away from Edmonds, forcing Francouer into the short end of a platoon, and that Rowand isn't nearly as good as he showed last year. I'm also way more pessimistic on Zimmerman than almost anyone else is, so that hurt him too.

Strengths: Starting pitching obviously is the main strength.

Weaknesses: Outfield (though if Francouer and Rowand are better than I expect maybe not), first base, second base, shortstop.

7th Bunnies SP rank 10 (4.36 ERA), Lineup rank 3 (5.50 RPG)

Prod was hurt by my assumption that Wolf is done, but is helped by the assumption Reynolds will start at third all year.

Strengths: Outfield, second base.

Weaknesses: Starting pitching.

6th Catahoulas SP rank 5th (4.14 ERA), Lineup rank 6 (5.29 RPG)

Lonewolf was hurt by me being pessimistic on Gorzelanny, though I was optimistic on Maddux. He was also hurt by my assumption Alou would only be healthy half the season.

Strengths: First base, shortstop.

Weaknesses: Second base (though only marginally worse than the pack), third base.

5th Mick #7 SP rank 4th (4.05 ERA), Lineup rank 7th (5.27 RPG)

Art was hurt because I'm already thinking I was too pessimistic on Jurrjens, and because I don't expect Upton to be a force yet. He was helped by my assumption that DeRosa will start at second most of the year, and that Doumit will play at least half the time.

Strengths: Second base, third base

Weaknesses: Catcher, shortstop

4th Chilichker SP rank 6th (4.15 ERA), Lineup rank 2nd (5.56 RPG)

Chico benefited by my assumption Pujols will play all year, Chipper will stay healthy all year, Kemp will be close to full time, and that Loaiza would be in the rotation all year and somewhat effective, and that McCann will return to his old form. So overall this is pretty optimistic.

Strengths: Catcher, third base, first base

Weaknesses: Outfield

3rd Export SP rank 9th (4.25 ERA), Lineup rank 1st (5.67 RPG)

Sandman was hurt by my assumption that Matsui's 2007 was a fluke.

Strengths: Outfield, third base

Weaknesses: Starting pitching, second base

2nd Wizards SP rank 3rd (3.94 ERA), Lineup rank 5th (5.42 RPG)

Merlin was helped by my assumption that Zito would be a mediocre pitcher, which already looks questionable now, that Braun and Soto are for real, that Ethier will play most of the time, and that Tejada will bounce back. He was hurt by my assumption that Kouzmanoff will continue to make errors and hit into double plays.

Strengths: First base, catcher, starting pitcher, shortstop.

Weaknesses: Third base

1st SayHeyKids SP rank 2nd (3.78 ERA), Lineup rank 4th (5.43 RPG)

SayHey was helped by my assumption that Correia will keep his job and be pretty good, Gallardo will pitch effectively all year, Backe will be pretty good, and that both Snyder and Castro will hit well and play a lot.

Strengths: Shortstop, starting pitching

Weaknesses: Third base

So there you go, for what it's worth (not much). Maybe I've given some of you motivation to prove me wrong, so I could even be helping the teams I wasn't as kind to.

This year Pinetar is adding an NL Exodus league so we can include even more great NL managers in the fun and excitement that is The Pinetar Experience. For the NL fans we've added the Exodus league and we'll add another if demand warrants it. So, if you think you missed out on the NL experience this year then maybe it's not too late. Fill out an application and let's see how many we can get in! Thanks to all the great managers who makes Pinetar what is it!

Humin'bird re-elected as Poobah for 2006

Humin'bird won re-election in this year Poobah race and Digger, Hitman, Schnee and Earth Worm Jim won election as the 2006 Board of Director members. Great staff in place for 2006 and things should continue to move in a positive direction for Pinetar.

Schnee captures Phoenix title.

What another super year for Phoenix. An epic battle that was Hitman lead the league from the beginning until mid September when Schnee and his Flying Circus were finally able to run him down. Quite a year and quite a run. Schnee gets promoted to Pinetar highest league for 2006.

Hammer Wins Pinetar Title!

-- Posted by Commissioner Digger on Saturday, October 1 2005

First year Pinetar Rocks Manager Hammer has successfully guided his Mesa NorthStars (90-70) to the Pinetar regular season Championship. Mesa left no doubt as they won 9 of 10 including 8 of 9 from playoff contenders. The NorthStars have been an offensive juggernaut leading all Pinetar teams with 797 runs scored & 269 round trippers led by Derrek Lee, Andruw Jones, David Wright, Ken Griffey Jr, Chase Utley & Rafael Furcal.

Currently residing in second place is Providence (88-72). One win by the Cobras or a loss by the Scalawags will guarantee Statman's team home field advantage for the opening round of Pinetar's 2005 Playoffs.

Elmore's Northtown Scalawags (86-74) have dropped their past four contests and will face Providence in the first round. It's been a tough few days for Northtown as they were in and out of first place for most of this month... only to drift down the standings during the seasons final week.

Toronto Tsunami (84-76) are clinging onto the leagues fourth and final playoff spot by one game after beating BoyZ Bluz (83-77) last night 6-4. One more win guarantees post season thrills for Toronto. BoyZ needs to win out to advance.

Redondo Bch (73-87) is pulling out all of the stops in an effort to avoid demotion in '06. Currently riding a 6 game winning streak... Xman trails Providence (74-86) by one game and must win out and hope the Cobras lose out to avoid relocation to Phoenix.

AMAZING RACE! 3-Way Tie for First!!! 4-Way Tie for Final Playoff Birth!!!

-- Posted by Commissioner Digger on Sunday, September 25 2005
Pinetar's Mesa NorthStars (85-69, 125) control their own destiny and have moved back into a three way tie for first after knocking off Providence (85-69, 14) last night. Mesa broke out the heavy lumber and clocked four live home runs (Wright, Furcal, Francoeur and Andruw Jones) to back a brilliant live start by Tom Glavine. With the victory, Hammer's squad knocked Statman's Cobras out of sole possession of first place creating another three way tie for the division lead. NorthStars, riding a five game win streak, remaining games: 2 @ Providence, 3 vs Scalawags, 3 @ Panthers.
Tonight's starters: Mesa, Chris Carpenter (13-5, 2.27...3 starts 8.31 in stat pool) @ Providence, Mark Mulder (9-6, 3.18... 5 starts 5.90 in stat pool). Both managers will spend a sleepless night praying for the best possible appearances from their hurlers... if any remain?

Elmore's Northtown Scalawags (85-69, 66) kept pace by pounding The Predators behind four homers of their own (Ramon Hernandez, Brady Clark & 2 by Luis Gonzalez). Dontrelle Willis (12-8, 2.51) trots to the hill and will certainly turn in a clutch performance tonight (2 starts, 1.59 stat pool) vs Providence's Vasquez who is pitching live (3 ER at press time). Five of Northown's eight remaining games will be played on their home turf. Elmore has one thing in mind... winning it all.

Pinetar legend Lady Cat asks: "Hammer, Elmore and Statman. Are you breathing? Do you lie awake at night wondering if you've done everything you can? Do you have nightmares about lineup holes?"

Hammer was quick to respond: "We were just blessed to have a schedule that allows us the opportunity to not wait for what others do (2 @ Stat, 3 vs Elmore, 3 @ Panthers). If we win it, and Elmore and Stat are quality managers with quality teams, we would have done it by beating them head to head and not by someone else's actions.....But, yes, it's stressful setting up the right match ups, watching the late games, etc. I imagine Statman and Elmore are stressing in their own ways. In an effort to catch last year's magic, the NorthStars will be playing the Scalawags in the Mazda Speed Ranch, not that we're supersitious or anything......The question should be, "It's a 3 way tie for the title, who's the better tactician for 8 more games?"

Pinetar's playoff battle rages on as four teams are tied for the leagues final playoff qualifier. New Haven Leg Cramps (79-75, 38), Toronto Tsunami (79-75, -2), Girlie Men (79-75, -25) and BoyZ Bluz (79-75, -32) all sporting identical won/loss records. Toronto bested New Haven on the road 5-4 in the first game of their make or break series.

BoyZ fate will rest on head to head matchups vs New Haven and Toronto to close out the 2005 season. They currently own a three game winning streak and playing on the road at Houston.

Everything is at stake in Pinetar. Division Title? Playoff Teams? Manager of the Month? Manager of the Year? Comeback Team of the Year? Rookie of the Year? Digger's Contest? Who will be left standing on day 162?

Pinetar Experience fans are hoping for clean and decisive season ending standings free of tie-breakers. Only time will tell. Check out Pinetar's DC chatter and stay up to date on TPE. Pennant Race Fever like you've never seen before!

Cobras Lead Cut To 1! Host Mesa in Battle for Pinetar Title!

-- Posted by Commissioner Digger on Saturday, September 24 2005
Nine games remain in Pinetar's 2005 regular season. After unleashing their venom during a recent ten game winning streak... the Providence Cobras have lost their last two games to BoyZ Bluz... and their lead now stands at one game.

Hammer and his Mesa NorthStars are hot once again... winners of four straight. Mesa will decide their own fate. In the match-up of the season, Mesa squares off vs division leading Providence on the road in Ronald Reagan Field. Hammer is sending out Glavine (vs Clemens), Carpenter (vs Mulder), and Keisler (vs Zambrano) in an attempt to wrestle the division away from the front running Cobras. After this all important series, the NorthStars will return home to recently renamed "Choking to 2006" Stadium to host the Northtown Scalawags.

Pinetar's four team race for the leagues final playoff qualifier continues. New Haven (79-74) leads by one over Toronto, Girlie & BoyZ (78-75). Toronto possesses the leagues toughest remaining schedule as they face off @ New Haven, vs Cobras and close out on the road at BoyZ. Tough games indeed.

Cobras on the Attack! Lead By 2!

-- Posted by Commissioner Digger on Thursday, September 22 2005

The Providence Cobras (85-66) continue to dominate. They've scored five or more runs in 8 of their last 10. Statman's led his team to ten consecutive victories as the Cobras have built a 2 game lead with 11 to go.

Northtown (83-68) and Mesa (82-69) have their hands full trying to play mistake free ball. These three teams should secure the leagues top three playoff positions this week.

Pinetar has a four team battle for the final playoff slot. Girlie Men (78-73) were streaking with six consecutive wins. However, they've dropped three in a row as they cling to fourth by one game over the slumping Leg Cramps (77-74). Toronto Tsunami (77-74) has had a stormy season all year. Win a few lose a few. Luckily they're back on the winning side. BoyZ currently has their hands full at home in The Smurf Turf vs Providence.

11 Games to Go! Pinetar Rocks 2005!

Pinetar Revolving Door... Cobras Take Control.

-- Posted by Commissioner Digger on Wednesday, September 21 2005
Pinetar's battle for the division crown has seen only one day since September 10 without teams tied for first place... until today. The Providence Cobras (84-66), spewing venom during nine consecutive wins, now leads Pinetar by one full game over Northtown (83-67). Things have cooled off lately in Mesa where the NorthStars have dropped 6 of 10 and now trail by 3.

Pinetar's fight for the final playoff birth continues. Girlie Men (78-72), winners of 7 of their past 10, current own fourth place by 2 games over New Haven, Toronto & BoyZ.

12 games remain in the 2005 regular season and nothing is remotely close to being settled. Baseball at its' best... Pinetar style.

Pinetar completes 2005 expansion!

-- Posted by on Saturday, April 2 2005
I'm very pleased to announce officially that Pinetar has completed it's 2005 expansion plans. Dues are paid and the enrollments are complete. Added this year were two AU leagues to the 2nd tier under Lagniappe. Armageddon and Liberty will serve the 2nd tier AU positions.
On the AL side, we successfully added Apollo and Omega as two new 3rd tier AL leagues, which will feed Calypso and Hyperion. We also added an AL Keeper league, Ares, to compliment our NL Keeper, Blind Faith. I'm extremely happy that we were able to add these five leagues to Pinetar this year and I feel it's important that we accomplished this to keep our 1st tier AU and 2nd tier AL leagues strong. They'll grow even stronger now with the compliment of these expansion leagues this year. Special thanks to the commissioners of the new leagues, Digger, Tigger, Hitman and Linn! Great jobs guys!

New leagues forming for 2005!!!

-- Posted by Humin'bird on Saturday, December 18 2004
The Pinetar Experience is recruiting managers for our 2005 programs. We'll add two new AU leagues to act as a 2nd tier to feed Lagniappe, the best AU league in the land! The first AU league is almost full with AU champions and playoffs teams and vets from '04, wanting a more competitive AU battle.
On the AL side, we want to add an additional two AL Ultimate leagues, to act as 3rd tier leagues to feed Hyperion and Calypso, two very fine AL leagues.
We'll also add an AL Keeper League this year, to compliment last years NL Blind Faith Keeper.
If the interest is there we'll even add an NL league or two!

If you're interested in joining any of these leagues, just fill out the Pinetar Application found on the web site.

Thanks for considering Pinetar!

Tribute to Bruno

-- Posted by on Saturday, October 23 2004
I know I speak for all of Pinetar when I say a final thanks to Bruno, our 2004 Grand Poobah for the tremendous job he did this year. Rising from the Pegasus commissioners role into the spotlight, Bruno put together a second level AL structure and watched all 3 AL leagues become ranked in the top 10 in BBM. He also implemented our first AU league, Lagniappe, which streaked to number one! He also added two Express leagues to the mix and an NL Keeper, which made the top 10 as well. A total Pinetar league growth of 6 new leagues under Bruno's leadership, 4 of which ranked top 10. A phenominal effort in expansion. In addition, Bruno was a calming influence on all managers in Pinetar and provided the great leadership and needed direction required in our first big expansion year. All I can say is thanks Bruno, for all you did, for all the time you spent, and for your encouragement throughout the year to everyone. You truly are the Grand Poobah of Pinetar forever. Hopefully in future years you'll return for another Poobah stint. For now, enjoy your well earned year off and hopefully we'll see you again in future elections for another stint.

2004 Pinetar Manager of the Year

-- Posted by on Thursday, October 21 2004
And so we come to the most prestigious of all Pinetar Experience awards: Manager of the Year.

The Manager of the Year is recognized as being the best field manager in all of Pinetar. The Manager of the Year has earned the respect and admiration of the Pinetar Nation.

45 votes were cast for the 2004 Pinetar Manager of the Year, and 11 of the 14 candidates received at least 1 vote.

The finalists this year are Hammer, Joel, and Statman.

Some comments on Hammer:
Solid throughout -- rebuilt his team mid-season to overcome key injuries. Huge September to seal the deal. #1 in NL Power Rankings and #2 overall. Look out Pinetar.

stands alone for me this year, made all the right moves in pinetars tougest league.

He led the most competitive Pinetar league almost all season. Impressive performance.

He consistently made trades throughout the season which benefited his team in a real tough league. A great contributor to the league with his posts and communication with other managers.

Comments on Joel:
Joel is amazing.

heavey poster, won a tough league by a lot, and a fellow Canuk

He did a great job in both Genesis and Calypso and who was more active ?

Yes, I'm voting for myself. I played two leagues only. Came in 1st by 10 games in the NL. Came in 2nd, 8 games ahead of third in a tough AL league. Totalled 192 wins in my second year playing BBM.

Comments on Statman:
Stat not only managed win the Pinetar league, but did so with nearly no money in the bank most of the season

He was promoted to Pinetar and won it immediately. He worked his way to the top with no money during a five-week stretch. And he closed out the season with a 12-game winning streak.

Statman smoked Pegasus last season and won Pinetar on his first try. Hands down MOTY in my book.

Statman kicked butt in Pegasus last year, got promoted to tour top tier league, and won again. How can you get any better?

When all of the ballots were counted, there was no question who would be named 2004 Pinetar Manager of the Year - 14 votes were cast for this manager. The other two managers each earned 7 votes apiece.

The 2004 Pinetar Manager of the Year is:

Hammer

2004 Pinetar Most Valuable Manager

-- Posted by on Wednesday, October 20 2004
By a very humbling landslide, bruno is the 2004 Pinetar Most Valuable Manager. I honestly considered removing myself from the ballot as I considered the possiblity of this scenario. 9 of the 10 candidates received at least 1 vote. In my opinion, others were more deserving, but 21 of the 43 MVM ballots had my name on them. Who am I to refuse your love?

I picked one quote I especially liked:

The Grand Poobah gets my vote. While many are deserving, bruno stand out this year at a critical time for Pinetar given the changes since last year. He deserves a lot of credit for the positive community that is Pinetar.

Thank you. I'm pleased to know that I at least achieved that goal in 2004.

There was a tie for 2nd place, and I would prefer to use the rest of this space to recognize them.

Receiving 7 votes each were Humin'bird and Matt the Dragon.

Comments about HB:
Hum gave a great chase for the Pegasus title. His endless work on the Pinetar rankings was phenomenal.

Hum tackled power rankings for another season and worked with BBM for their new GP formula.

Hum did a great job as manager, also as Commish, and finally, with his power rankings. Talk about versatile.

Hum's stats updates rock!

Comments for Matt the Dragon:
Any manager who has their own thread in the Bar & Grill has to be valuable.

Stepped in to prevent a robo in one league, stepped up as a commmissioner in another, won is original league, had twins, was a quasi-olympian, his ask MTD column. All as a but f*cking rookie.

Matt did more work behind the scenes than that Earthworm Jim fellow.

This guy is incredible. With all due respect, I still think on paper his team sucked. But he just kept winning. It was because he knows the game. I would put him with any line up against BBMs best. Very impressive. He will be a perennial winner, I guarantee.

2004 Pinetar Comeback Manager of the Year

-- Posted by on Tuesday, October 19 2004
Once again, the mighty Pinetar Nation was torn between two candidates.

Every single CMOTY candidate received at least two votes, and 40 total votes were cast.

The top two finishers are Joel and Hitman.

Some comments about Joel:
Good job keeping people involved and being available to answer questions.

Joel is the MAN.

Based on Joel's experience in the AL I didn't think he had a chance in that league. It's hard to say comeback because technically he was never really down, but, he certainly surpassed any expectation I had of what he could do. With both great NL and AL successes this year he's now one of those rare great NL/AL guys who's a threat anywhere he plays, anytime. I feel he wasn't in that category last year so he gets my comeback vote.

I'll never vote for myself like this again, but I had a great year. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts. I can only improve this much so many years in a row. Finished out of the playoffs by one game my first year ever, won an NL league the next. Never played AL ball before, finished 2nd in a top 10 LSF league.

Comments for Hitman:
If Hitman pulled himself out of a dumpster he gets my vote.

Great second half in a league left for dead.

Hit was left for dead at the break. He never quit and made the league interesting, when he wasn't working me for a deal on his CTS or one of my studs....To a quality guy, who might have caught up to Digger if he had another week, Hit is the comeback manager of the year.

Hit has had a great year as opposed to last.

But in the end, there can only be one Pinetar 2004 Comeback Manager of the Year.

By a margin of 8 votes to 7, that manager is our very own, lovable, fluffy and probably just a little squishy Hitman!

2004 Pinetar Commissioner of the Year

-- Posted by on Monday, October 18 2004
The 2004 Pinetar Commissioner of the Year race was close. 9 of the 14 commissioners received votes, but in the end, only 2 commissioners were in contention: Lady Cat of Chrysalis and Slim Chance of Calypso.

Both commissioners took the helm of new leagues for their inaugural seasons as commissioners. With a touch of personal magnetism and a whole bunch of fun, these two were bound to meet up at the end of the season for this award.

Some of the comments for Lady Cat:
Lady Cat was the reason the Chrysalis League was what it was, from her screening managers in the beginning, taking a chance on a "rookie", Matt and his Dragons, and keeping every league member involved all year long. None like her!!!

Ran a tight ship, but didn't get in the way. Made things easy for all of us, especially a rookie like myself. Plus, after reading the list of other candidates, I guarantee she's the cutest one in the bunch.

The only commissioner to give out hugs ... 29 at a time, no less.

Lady Cat certainly deserves an award, and this is a good spot to give it to her for all her hard work.

She seemed to be the most active commissioner with her league of all of the Pinetar commissioners.

I had two great commissioners all year in LC and Slim, and a third for the second half in Schnee, but seeing as Slim expressed the notion that LC was the best commissioner, I'll pick her over him. ;)

I did not have the experience of seeing how the other commish's did. I can only go with what I saw. And I was proud to have Lady Cat as my commish.

LadyCat, cause she rallied the troops in Calyso, did the birthday thing, was Pinetar treasurer, did the trophies etc etc.... and cause she thinks I'm a hunk!

Comments for Slim Chance included:
Good job keeping people involved and being available to answer questions.

Bar none, Slim was far and away Pinetar's commissioner of the year. His contests and other ramblings on the Calypso thread made me want to play AL BBM again.

His Cubbies lost so I figured he needed a boost!

Slim was busy with his professional life this year, but in a bit of quiet league he made a big effort to make membership fun with contests, and attention to his charges. He worked hard for the league, made sure we understood Hyperion sucks, and deserves the vote here.

Great job starting Calypso & beginning the second tier AL leagues

Outstanding job in assembling a league from scratch. Kept everyone interested all year round.

Calypso already had a nucleus from Genesis before it had a commissioner, but Slim recruited some top AL managers to the league to push it to a top 10 league in its first season.

In the end, the top two vote-getters received 12 and 10 votes out of a total 43 ballots cast.

With 12 votes, Pinetar's 2004 Commissioner of the Year is

Lady Cat

Zig Zag takes 2005 Power Rankings Crown

-- Posted by on Sunday, October 10 2004
Zig Zag and his Telemacy took the Power Rankings Crown for 2005 with a surperb year in Odyssey. The Telemacy ranked 1st among all AL leagues (real good ones too) in GRF offense and 2nd among all AL leagues in GRF defense. If you're the best in offense and defense then you've done it right! Congrats to Zig Zag!

Pinetar 2005 Staff Announced

-- Posted by on Friday, October 8 2004
After a week of campaigning, the Pinetar Nation has spoken and elected its leaders for the 2005 season.

50 Pinetar managers cast a ballot. Managers were asked to vote for 1 Poobah candidate and up to 3 Group Leader candidates. Every ballot contained a vote for Poobah. Most voted for 3 Group Leaders, while others opted for 2, 1 or no choice.

Hitman and Humin'bird ran for Grand Poobah. They both campaigned well, taking the time to answer every question asked of them. The vote was close from the beginning, but in the end, Humin'bird put a few votes between them. Humin'bird was elected by a 28-22 margin.

Digger, Hammer, Joel and Schnee were in the race for the 3 Group Leader positions. The race eventually became a race for the third position. Schnee was named on 40 of the 50 ballots, while Joel was named on 34 of the 50. Folks seemed split between Digger and Hammer, with few ballots naming both candidates. In the end, Digger landed 30 votes to Hammer's 25.

Thank you to all of the candidates. You are all worthy of the positions for which you ran. Knowing that there was a chance you would not be elected, you still put your name on the ballot to allow the Pinetar Nation to have choices.

Best of luck to the 2005 Pinetar Staff!

Pinetar at the Park - Stade Olympique

Saturday my friend and I arrived in Montreal. We checked into the hotel, and as he works nights, we crashed for a bit. Then off to the stadium.

We go their early, perused the gift shop, and got in when the gates opened. They gave us all a free pennant, which I kept and it promptly became crushed in my knapsack. My friend Nathan knew better than to take it.

We wanted to try and get autographs, and waited by the Phillies dugout, then I went to get some Expos.

Our seats were very nice, just outside the screen between home and the first base dugout. It made it very easy to watch the pitches come sailing in. We were about 15 rows back, but Olympic Stadium seating is pretty steep so you never have anyone's head in your way.

The game was entertaining until the Expos bullpen blew the game to first allow the Phillies to tie, and then go ahead in the top of the 10th. At least Tony Batista got a run back with a dinger in the bottom of the inning. It was the only HR we saw.

I had a beer at stadium but not much else. I was too busy scoring the game. I do pitches as well, and with all the lineup shifts, I was writing a lot. Makes you appreciate the work you don't have to do when scoring when a DH is in the lineup.

We ended up having a late meal in Chinatown at the end of the night, then back to the hotel.

Sunday we got up at a decent hour, I got my eggs and hash browns for breakfast, and then we got out to the stadium early. I decided to buy an Expos tri-colour hat. The best hat ever in MLB history.

I also bought the media guide and instead of a program, the Expos have just been selling a very nice souvenir book all season with profiles of most of the key players and a couple articles on Tim Raines and Jose Vidro. Saves money, I guess.

What they still do after all these years is sell you a scorecard for $1 separately, if you don't buy the program, which I think all clubs should do. The Jays don't do this which I think is dumb, even if I use my own score sheets. For a $1 you get the lineups and a key to MLB pitchers' uniform numbers to sort out who has won or lost a game on the scoreboards in the outfield.

The great giveaway was a really hip tuque. My hair is longer at the moment so I looked like a skate punk with the hat on. Shaved years off of me.

I was able to get more signatures at the field, and was standing right by the bullpen mound to watch Hernandez warm up. He is such a horse. I guess some guys are born with a rubber arm.

The game was close but the Expos just could not score, and made Corey Lidle look like Nolan Ryan. Once again, I see a loss. Even in good years I think I have a terrible record when at Olympic Stadium.

They only sell seats in the lower bowl these days, so the 12,300 on Sunday seemed very cosy, and the crowds are way more active and fun loving than in Toronto. If only the Expos provided the fans and the Jays the budget, you might have a really good team.

The stadium though, is getting a little run down, although I like the new darker coloured roof. I still enjoy the architecture of the outside. I suppose I'd like the inside if there had been 30,000 people.

We spent the rest of the day looking at old Montreal, had dinner, and got out of town at midnight.

The weather was perfect, so the trip was more than worth it.

I have to admit I felt much more like a little kid at these two games than I do at SkyDome.

I suppose it was because I was a fan of the Expos when I was a little kid.

I worried that there would be something funereal about going to these games, but the hardcore fans are there and still having fun.

This is the best park for getting autographs. You can wait by the away team dugout runway for visiting players, and people are good to hand stuff down for you if you are not in front.

You can also advance onto the top of the dugout to hand stuff down to players if they acknowledge that they will sign for you. This a perquisite likely not offered elsewhere.

I got Bobby Abreu, Jimmy Rollins and Mike Lieberthal on cards, who were all really friendly. Pat Burrell though is a non-signer. 'Nuff said.

On the Expos side, you can wait by the bullpen on the field and 2 or three Expos come out 20 minutes before the game after they are warmed up. This is probably pretty rare too. It is like being at a AAA game, practically.

On Saturday I got Jamey Carroll, Val Pascucci, Genesis World Champion Brad Wilkerson, and Ryan Church.

On Sunday I got Genesis World Champions T.J. Tucker and Brian Schneider, Luis Ayala, and I was able to get Carroll again with Endy Chavez on a dual rookie card from last year, which was nice.

Carroll couldn't seem to sign enough, and apparently Wilkerson is this way too. Really friendly guys, and they move up and down the rail to try and get to as many fans as they can. I can't compliment the players enough for the effort they make, considering how small the fan base is.

I have some nice souvenirs from these games.

And of course, lastly, I got the chance to meet my second Pinetar member in EWJ. I got to hear how Ankiel blew up and fed him a win in Disoriented Express. I was quite pleased to report that I had dumped Ankiel a few nights earlier when he ran out of 0.00 ERA performances.

thanks, I think, to MTD for the gif

Welcome to my 10,000th post. I wonder if it's too much to ask for a fresh cake from the Panthers.

Slim says "He thinks it matters and is milking the event."

I suppose to some degree I did think it matters, and wanted to make my 10,000th post a little different from my other 9,999 posts. At the very least, it means that I hope this post makes sense.

I've always enjoyed the Diamond Club. When I first started playing Baseball Manager, it was one of a handful of online games offered by Prodigy. It was 1992, and I was trying to explain to my customers why having Prodigy on their new computer was a good thing. I signed up for the service so I would have some idea of what this Prodigy thing was. (That's the same reason I had my 386sx 80MB computer! "80 megabytes? You'll NEVER use that much space on your hard drive!!!)

I joined an open league that year - Palm Desert - that used the Diamond Club a little. The league below us, Palmdale, used it all the time. So after reading the few Palm Desert posts that there were, and replying to them, I'd read through the Palmdale posts (I still lurk around other threads these days, just to see what's going on out there). Palmdale used the DC the way that the Pinetar league used to - dozens of posts every day. By the next season I hooked up with Palmdale - \-/ooligan, Al, Ardmister, Stallion, G-man and Mo, among others. Over the years, I had a blast getting to know them, even visiting with some across the country.

That first season, I played numerous Ultimate and Lightning leagues (at $119.95 per Ultimate, my credit cards took a hit that year!). I never have perfected the draft, but I have learned some things over the seasons.

I continued to play over the years, and spent alot of time on the Diamond Club. I came to know the likes of Slim Chance, Yeaglemeister and Coach Art "The Owl" Dameron, and have been able to meet each of them in person at least once. I haven't been disappointed yet meeting a friend from the DC.

My father died in the summer of 1995, and I took some time off from work. Back then, a manager would post a question on the DC and wait for one of the coaches to come along and answer the question. There were probably some questions that were answered by others, but the coaches - Art Dameron, Bob Kessler and Jan Larson - were took most of the questions. So one day I'm home reading through the DC, and a manager asked a question - one that I knew the answer to (my one and only guideline in answering questions has been to only attempt the ones I have the answer to...increases the success rate tremendously!) - so I answered him.

I started doing more of that for the season and for seasons to come. I can't lay claim to leading the charge of managers helping managers, but I was near the front line. Today, the coaches' load is quite a bit lighter thanks to the multitude of managers who take the time to answer someone else's question the way their's was once answered.

That's why I can understand why folks don't use the DC more. I got tickets to Indians games - which were sold - simply because one of my leaguemates lived in Cleveland and had season tickets. I never did get to meet Q, but I did enjoy his tickets. Slim Chance, who I had only met online, put me up in house for a few nights while I was traveling cross country. Yeags and I caught a Memphis Chicks game once when I was in town. Coach Dameron and I had breakfast in Lexington. I've met some great folks who I otherwise never would have met, and only because of the DC.

My digital celebrity brought me an invitation to be commissioner of Pegasus in 2003. I've enjoyed Pinetar the last two season - and had been a lurking fan of their DC posts. Roscoe, Ed Zachary, Lady Cat and the others had some enjoyable conversations that had absolutely nothing to do with baseball. I miss waking up to the 100 Pinetar league posts that were left while I was asleep.

I've played in more BBM leagues than I can even start to recall. At the risk of offending some, here's a short list:

Palm Desert

Palmdale

Crestview

Cooperstown

JC's Fan Club

Party Fools, a.k.a. George Brett Keeper

Odyssey

Lagniappe

Casey Jones

Pony Express

And some Express league many years ago with Maximus, whose team was then named the PornStars...

I've enjoyed them all, and look forward to more in the future - though I have to find some way to step down from 6 leagues for 2005.

I'm looking forward to meeting Lady Cat, Crazy Joe and Mac (Riverstick Aces) in the coming weeks, and meeting other BBMers in the future.

Thanks for trudging through this. I've had a blast.

On now to 10,001!

for the brawlers I'm (a very wordy) bruno

Second Pinetar Caption Contest Winners Announced

-- Posted by on Friday, July 16 2004
Thank you to everyone who submitted entries in the Second Official Pinetar Caption Contest. The judges have cast their votes and left the building.

First of all, these were the entries (numbered in order of appearance):

1. SLIM CHANCE "Where's Stevie when you need him?" --- Jim Edmonds: Bud Man, Bartman Fan.

2. BILLY BONES "Interesting! I have always wondered what Slim Chance looked like."

3. EARTHWORM JIM ( The St. Louis Cardinals filed a formal protest during yesterday's game after centerfielder Jim Edmonds was consumed by the man-eating ivy at Wrigley Field. Edmonds is seen here with his glove and right arm already gone and waving goodbye to the friendly Cub fans as some of those fans reach down in an attempt to aid him.

Cards manager Tony LaRussa protested that he had not been forewarned of the danger. "Had I known, I'd have sent Ray Lankford out there instead".

The carnivorous Madagascar Ivy was planted in 1981 on the orders of then Cub owner William Wrigley after he became enamored with the Broadway musical "Little Shop of Horrors".

LaRussa was unaware of the carnivorous nature of the ivy because it's previous victim was almost 4 years ago when the Cubs Glenallen Hill was swallowed. "I guess it was just digesting since then" said Cub groundskeeper Roger Baird. "I didn't know if it would ever get hungry again. We had to mix Alka-Seltzer into the irrigation water for two weeks after that incident". Baird didn't expect any similar problems this time as Edmonds was "kinda gristly".

Cub fan Slim Chance agreed, deeming Edmonds a "low carb, Atkins friendly meal".

4. HIT MAN Edmonds: I think it's worth two outs catching the ball bare handed in the ivy.

5. HIT MAN Edmonds: If I hide in the ivy these fans wont be able to pour beer on me.

6. HIT MAN Edmonds: If I hide in the ivy, I can scratch myself with 1 hand and catch the ball with the other.

7. SHAWN GAMMON: caption: "The Agony and the Ivory"

8. SHAWN GAMMON: Edmonds: "Bartman, we don't need no stinking Bartman".

9. HOUND: ACME, Inc demonstrated their new Bartman Retractable Fence today at Wrigley Field. Jim Edmonds, the first victim, is shown in the picture above. The newly designed fence only opens during critical points in a game. It is expected that the fence will only be open while the Cubs are batting during the regular season, to ensure hope is at a maximum. During any critical late season or playoff games, the fence would then open for Cubs opponents.

In an unrelated story, ACME Inc was recently purchased by Bartman-Goat Enterprises.

10. DR JAY Edmonds: "Is this heaven?"

Kevin Costner (who's the guy on the left, 3 rows up, with a Cubs shirt on): "No, it's hell. Heaven's only for when you catch the ball."

11. MTD Edmonds leaps at the opportunity to sample beer on an IV drip, now available at Wrigley.

12. SEAN LEWIS Edmonds: "Ack, that chick is staring at me I better hide in the ivy"

Notable in this competition was the disagreement amongst the judges. One liked Earthworm Jim’s entry so much that he awarded it his first AND second place votes. Another said it was too long and gave it no points whatsoever. The same, obviously attention-span-challenged judge also eliminated The Hound’s long entry. In fact, this judge was quite vitriolic about all the entries. Disqualifying one entrant just for using a word he didn't like, another for being corny, another for being unimaginative, he spat, "Clearly this was not a case of who won, but rather who lost least! ... You don't need a judge for this contest. You need an executioner!"

WHEW!

And now to the winners:

First Prize goes to Earthworm Jim's entry #3.

Second Prize goes to Hit Man's entry #6.

CONGRATULATIONS, YOU TWO!

Also receiving votes but no prizes are Hit Man's entry #5, Dr. Jay's entry #10, and MTD's entry #11.

The Panthers will be shopping for prizes this weekend and hope to find something suitable for the two winners. They only wish they could send something to everyone as they personally loved all the entries.
