Kings Fall to Bluenosers
-- Posted by bruno on Wednesday, September 22 2004 As was predicted, the last meeting of the Mardi Gras Kings and Moncton Bluenosers was a sweep...for the Bluenosers.
The Kings pitching, led all season by Pedro Martinez and Jason Schmidt, crumbled in this series, pushing the Kings deeper into 7th place, 8 games out of 1st.
GM Rex cancelled his normal post-game press conference after losing last night's game. Managment is rumored to be considering a change in leadership for the 2005 season.
Kings Face Iguana Onslaught
-- Posted by bruno on Sunday, September 19 2004 Falling into an all too familiar habit, th Mardi Gras Kings lost the last game of the series agains the Blue Iguanas, making the Kings 2-1 in the series.
A team struggling for the playoffs can't afford to lose any games, much less lose games to teams below them in the standings.
The upcoming series is a make-or-break one for both the Kings and their opponent, the Moncton Bluenosers.
The Bluenosers are in 5th place, 2 games out of 4th, while the Kings are in 7th, 4 games out of 4th.
A sweep by either team will go along way towards moving into a playoff positions. Even losing 1 of 3 could be disastrous.
The next three nights will pit Kerry Wood (5-4) for the Bluenosers and Jason Marquis (3-1) for the Kings; Rich Harden (3-0) vs Pedro Martinez (18-6); and Brad Radke (10-3) vs Jason Schmidt (9-9).
Inserting Jason Schmidt in game three was a gamble for the Kings. It's 50/50 that Schmidt will pull a 6ER game; the Kings are hoping for the complete game gem he pitched most recently.
The Bluenosers and Kings were once 10th and 9th, respectively, in the standings. The Kings sent Carlos Zambrano to the Bluenosers in return for Bobby Abreu. The Bluenosers were taken to task by leaguemates for completing such a trade, but in retrospect the two teams were correct to pull off this deal. Now they're fighting for the playoffs.
Great series coming up, so stay tuned!
Kings Stumble to Victory
-- Posted by bruno on Saturday, September 18 2004 Every win is precious, which makes last night's lineup for the Mardi Gras Kings a mystery.
With only 1 start to his credit - 1 inning, 4 ER - Frank Brooks took the mound against Mark Prior for the Blue Iguanas. Kings management was apparently unaware of Brooks' 1 poor start. Additionally, the team is juggling 7 relief pitchers, and had only 4 available for last night's game.
So in spite of 4 ER in the 1st, and 4 ER allowed due to a lack of pitchers in the pen, the Kings managed a 9-6 win over the Blue Iguanas. With a double, triple, 4 homeruns and 7 walks, the Kings put up a 13.93 total offense score and were not to be denied a victory.
In the final match of the season against the Blue Iguanas, the Kings had Luke Hudson on the mound. Hudson has 2 starts available - 4/2 and 4/3. The head scratching continues at Mardi Gras headquarters.
Kings Late Season Push
-- Posted by bruno on Friday, September 17 2004 The Mardi Gras Kings have lingered in the bottom half (third?) of the standings all season. But over the course of the last 4 series, the Kings have taken 2 of 3 from each of the top 3 teams in the league. The Kings are determined the make the playoffs.
First up are series with the Iguanas and Bluenosers. "We struggled against the Iguanas last time," said GM Rex. "They threw two lefties at us and we couldn't hit 'em. We tried to match lefty for lefty, and the Iguanas smoked us." Rex would not confirm what strategy the Kings would use in this last matchup with the Iguanas. "Always expect the unexpected."
Ten Team Battle for Lagniappe Rages On.
-- Posted by Digger on Tuesday, July 6 2004 Balance? Toughness? Mediocrity? Take your pick. As Lagniappe managers do battle for league supremacy only one thing is for certain. There's no clear cut team to beat. Only 8 games separate first from worst as every team continues to jockey for position. League standings seem to change daily while fans are certainly getting their monies worth in 2004. American Nationals front office has been busy gearing up for the second half. Recently signed Marcus Giles, red hot Richard Hildago, Mike Sweeney, Bernie Williams, Dimitri Young and Carl Crawford will be counted on to provide power and speed in an attempt to put more runs on the board. After last nights 5-3 victory over McBankrupt Digger was jubilant juring the post game press conference. "We're all in this dogfight... it's been fun & frustating so far. Our fans should be excited by our recent acquisitions. Soon to return from injury will be Chavez and Giles... two players who should add instant pop to our lineup. Speaking of pop, Hildago & Young signings are welcomed additions. Team chemistry is now needed as deciding who to start on a daily basis will be our biggest challenge.... and could decide Nationals fate. We're welcoming the All Star break as a chance to heal our wounds and for the new faces to get to know each other... and hopefully gell. If I were to put my finger on any one weekness... it would be our starting pitching. I've been told our front office is looking to acquire a front line starting pitcher for one or two of our bats."
Kings A-Tradeu for Abreu
-- Posted by bruno on Monday, June 28 2004 The Mardi Gras Kings completed a long-awaited trade with the Moncton Bluenosers last night. The deal sent ace starter Zambrano (the one from Chicago...the one who doesn't suck...oh, just look it up) for outfielder Bobby Abreu.
"We have one of the best team ERAs in the league," stated Kings manager Rex. "But it wasn't doing us any good in 10th place. What we needed was some power in the lineup. Bobby's stat pool is stacked, and we're hoping he can give the offense a boost."
The Kings still have Jason Schmidt, Pedro Martinez, AJ Burnett, Cliff Lee and Joe Kennedy in the starting rotation.
Abreu immediately moves into the RHP starting lineup, and will assume the same vs LHP as soon as he gains some more starts.
Kings Ace Cleans Out Locker
-- Posted by bruno on Thursday, June 3 2004 After last night's 7-3 win over the Bluenosers, members of the Moncton and Mardi Gras front offices were seen at a local pub. The Kings have the leagues' second-lowest team ERA, but have allowed the third-most runs. The Bluenosers have scored the second most runs in the league, but languish in 9th place due to allowing the most runs in the league.
The speculation is that Mardi Gras Kings ace Carlos Zambrano is on his way to Moncton. The Kings' star pitcher is slated to pitch tonight against the Iguanas, but has cleaned out his locker.
With so many needs on the Kings, it's uncertain which Bluenoser might be coming in a trade, but most rumors seem to focus on outfielder Bobby Abreu.
What's in the water?
-- Posted by Digger on Tuesday, May 18 2004 2004 has produced an exciting beginning to this baseball season. Roger Clemens has been phenominal in his new NL uniform. Mike Piazza is the new catching HR champ. Controversy still surrounds Bonds who recently moved past Willie Mays and is creeping closer to The Babe. New York and Boston are jockeying for first place...again. Anaheim continues to win despite losing Anderson, Glaus, Erstad, Donnelly & Salmon for extended injuries. Texas is playing inspired baseball after the departure of Alex Rodriguez. Detroit has greatly improved after challenging for modern day futility in '03. Florida is proving they're for real again in '04. Chicago and Houston promise to do battle right up thru game 162. And just about every single ML manager is working overtime trying to field healthy lineups. Insurance premiums must be rising to new all time highs. 2004 has been one of the most star studded injury filled seasons of recent memory. Here's the ever growing star list of injuries thus far: AL- Glaus, Nomar, Erstad, Donnelly, Wickman, Mays, Helling, Karsay, Orlando Hernandez, Zimmerman, Nelson, Lee, Vina, Ellis, Graffanino, Koskie, Nixon, Guiel, Stewart, Garret Anderson, Dimitri Young, Burks, Salmon & Segui. NL includes: Sexson, Nick Johnson, Larson, Marcus Giles, Furcal, Reyes, Grudzielanik, Polanco, Alomar, Alex Gonzalez, Kearns, Wilson, Walker, Giambi, Bergeron, Everett, Bonds, Mantei, Reynolds, Prior, Dempster, Remlinger, Neagle, Wendell, Burnett, Fox, Shuey, Eischen, Strickland, Wagner, Wells, Nen, Lincoln. Lagniappe managers have been weathering the storm very well. What was once a very full free agent catalogue has been quickly reduced to mediocre. Surprisingly, our league has not had any blockbuster trades. This could all change should the current climate of player breakdowns continue to rise. Only 5 games separate top from bottom as Lagniappe promises to remain competitive all season long.
Kings Already Ready for Renegades
-- Posted by bruno on Thursday, May 13 2004 "We're not looking past the Mogilnys," Mardi Gras Kings manager Rex said Thursday afternoon, "but rest assured that my guys know the next series is agains the Renegades."
Rex told reporters that his rotation for the Renegades series will be Joe Kennedy, Pedro Martinez and Victor Zambrano.
Noting that the next three series are against league leaders Mogilnys (tied for 2nd), Renegades (tied for 2nd) and Nationals (1st place), Rex boldly stated, "This is our chance to make a move in Lagniappe. It's now or never!"
The Kings are reportedly still working on revamping the bullpen in an effort to move the Kings from the lead in the "Most Runs Allowed" category.
Rex hinted that he's still working on his SP strategy agains the Nationals. "I need to study his lineup a little more," is all Rex would say.
The Mardi Gras Kings blew what was a chance to win consecutive series for the first time this season by dropping the first two games to the Minotaurs, 7-4 and 7-5.
The Kings continue to get pounded every night by the opposition, with a league-high 121 runs against. The bullpen is nearly unhittable, so the team continues to sort through the various starters on the team and compare them against the available free agents.
The bigger problem seems to be with the offense, which trails in most all statistical categories. The team clearly needs more power and more patient hitters to be successful. While the platoon system seems to be working, it's not showing signs of being particularly effective.
Team manager Rex told reporters, "I think for the most part we have the right players on the roster. It's just a matter of the team gelling. Right now, we're more like jam." Powered by Coranto
